Alternative Engagements Rings

Looking for an alternative to the traditional white diamond engagement ring?  We love that!  Not big fans of convention, we don’t like being told what a “proper” engagement ring looks like.  If that’s you, too, then here are some ideas you won’t find in the mainstream, and the reasons they make good choices for long-term wear.

Sapphires of different colors!

While softer than diamonds, the corundum family (meaning sapphires and rubies) are the hardest natural colored gemstone on the planet.  Here is where you’ll find the most variety of color, combined with excellent durability.

Also in the family, with the undisputed color of love itself, ruby.

Next in line: Aquamarine, Spinel and Topaz

These three gems are often overlooked for engagement rings. They offer excellent durability relative to most other gems, and generally are more affordable than diamonds, sapphires and rubies.  So, if you’re looking for a gem on the larger side, it’s worth considering stones like these.

What about birthstones?

Well, if you happen to be born in April (diamond), July (ruby), or September (sapphire), you can definitely have your birthstone be the focal point of your engagement ring.  But if your birthstone is something else, you’ll have to ask yourself some important questions:

  • Do I expect to wear my engagement ring every day, never taking it off?

  • Will I not feel engaged/married if I don’t have my engagement ring on?

  • Do I work with my hands?

  • Am I hard on my jewelry?

  • Would I be ok with having the stone I love, even if I can only wear my ring for quieter, lower-activity days?

  • Am I willing to have my ring inspected and maintained at least annually?

Those willing to understand the special characteristcs of their desired gem could certainly wear it to symbolize their engagement!

(Just not everywhere, all the time.)

An engagement ring can really be almost anything you want it to be, as long as you consider how it will fit in with your lifestyle.  If you’re considering an alternative to diamond, take time to learn about the special delights AND limitations of your desired gem.
